Dermal Filler FAQ's

Dermal fillers work by ‘filling out’ and smoothing away lines, folds and wrinkles. The treatment aims to replace lost volume in lines, folds and wrinkles which occur due to the ageing process, firming and smoothing out after first treatment.

The filler contains, hyaluronic acid (eg: Belotero, Emervel, Juvéderm, Perfectha, Restylane, Surgiderm, Teosyal, Uma Jeunesse), a naturally occurring substance found in different parts of the body such as skin, bone, joint and eyes. Hyaluronic acid molecule is rich in water and is responsible for the volume of the skin. The decrease in production of hyaluronic acid with age results in sagging and wrinkle/line formation. Hyaluronic acid acts as a lubricant and moisturiser and is clinically produced therefore it comes from plant and bacterial source rather than animal or human source. It adds volume and shape to the skin. A local anaesthetic is used to numb the area. A small amount of the natural gel, hyaluronic acid is injected using a tiny needle just below the skin directly into the wrinkle. This results in the lines, folds and wrinkles being filled, lifted, and smoothed out becoming firmer and wrinkles become visibly reduced. Results can be seen after first treatment. Once treatment is administered, normal daily activities can be resumed immediately. Treatment can be combined with wrinkle reduction treatment for a full facelift giving a more refreshing effect.

Hyaluronic acid filler is a clear, natural, non-animal based stabilised gel. Cosmetic improvement can be seen as soon after treatment and tend to last between six and twelve months after treatment. It is a safe, long-lasting but non-permanent treatment, therefore, retreatment is usually required once or twice a year to maintain the desired effect.

Nasolabial lines (lines between the nose and mouth), Marionette lines (lines between the mouth and chin), Lips, Cheeks, Sad mouth lines, Décolletage (cleavage lines), Back of hands (Mesotherapy), Nose Reshaping, Chin reshaping.

Treatment typically takes 30 minutes. Prior to the treatment, a thorough medical history is taken to establish suitability for treatment. The treatment is catered to a client’s needs discussed at the consultation. Once the client is happy, the consent form is signed, pre-treatment photos are taken and treatment is commenced.

The area is thoroughly cleansed. A local anesthetic is applied / injected to the area to be treated to make the procedure as comfortable as possible. The dermal filler is injected under the skin surface, directly into the wrinkles of the face using a tiny needle. The injection site is gently massaged to promote even integration into the tissue. Discomfort is minimal with the procedure as treatment is brief.

If the client experiences redness and slight bruising, an ice pack can be applied and this should resolve within a few days. Make-up can be used to cover minor bruising. Normal activity can be commenced immediately after procedure.

Dermal filler treatment is generally a safe treatment, but occasionally side effects can occur. Redness, burning, itching and discomfort at the injection site may occur but should resolve within a few hours. Swelling and bruising can last up to two weeks but are less common. Hypersensitivity / allergic reactions are rare (treated with antihistamines) Less commonly blue discolouration of the treated area, granuloma, tissue infection / abscess (rare).

Clients should allow the skin to recover after laser or skin peel. The recommended time to have dermal fillers are 6 weeks after laser or skin peel. The treatment should be avoided if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a bleeding disorder, known allergy to dermal fillers or anesthetic. Clients on anticoagulants or immunosuppressant drugs.
