Wrinkle Reduction treatment

The active ingredient in wrinkle reduction treatment is botulinum toxin type A, which is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. This toxin has been used medically for over 20 years to treat conditions such as blepharospasm (eyelid spasm), a specific type of cerebral palsy, hemifacial spasm (twitching facial muscle) and cervical dystonia (especially spasm and twitching of the neck). It has been approved by the FDA and MHRA for Cosmetic use.

How does it work?

 A small amount of the protein is injected into the muscles of the face using a tiny needle. The protein works at the neuromuscular junction, temporarily blocking the release of acetylcholine from the nerve endings. This results in blocking of contraction of the muscle responsible for facial wrinkles. The wrinkles relax, soften and become less noticeable. Results are not permanent as new nerve sprouts form at the nerve endings which typically take 3-6months. Muscles regain activity and wrinkles begin to reappear. 

Cosmetic improvement can be seen as soon as three to five days after treatment and tend to last between four and six months after treatment. Full effect is seen typically by two weeks. Retreatment is required to remove wrinkles and lines that may reappear, and retreatment helps train the muscles to relax as wrinkles and lines that reappear become less severe after each subsequent treatment.

An appointment typically takes 30 minutes and treatment take 10-15 minutes. Prior to the treatment, a thorough medical history is taken to establish suitability for treatment. The treatment is catered to a client’s needs and discussed at the consultation. Once the client is happy, the consent form is signed and treatment can commence. Before and after photos are taken so that the client is able to see any changes.

The area to be treated is cleansed with a sterile wipe and the injection sites are marked. A small amount of Botulinum toxin is injected into the muscle of the face using a tiny needle. Discomfort is minimal with the procedure as treatment is brief. 

An Aftercare leaflet will be provided to the client after the procedure. For 48 hours, it is recommended that the treated area is not massaged. The client can use a soft towel to pat dry the area gently if it is to be washed. Avoid physical exercise (gym, exercise, class) and avoid a sauna on the same day. For 4 hours after treatment the client should not bend or lie down excessively. For 1 hour after treatment the client is recommended to do gentle facial exercise to tense and relax the facial muscles. (e.g.:- frown, smile, squint, lift eyebrows) For 12 hours after treatment, it is not recommended to fly. If the client experiences slight redness and bruising, an ice pack can be applied and this should resolve within an hour. Mineral make-up can be used to cover minor bruising after 4 hours. Normal activity can be commenced immediately after procedure. 

Wrinkle reduction treatment, administered by a skilled professional carries very little risk and is generally a safe treatment. Side effects include: – Slight redness after treatment can occur but will settle. Slight bruising / swelling at the injection site may occur although less common. Occasionally headaches can occur which are transient. Temporary dropping of eyelid or brow could occur which normally resolves within a week or two. (Rare) Double vision (rare) 

Aspirin, Ibuprofen, St John’s Wort and alcohol should be avoided prior to and immediately after treatment to help reduce the risks of bruising. The treatment should be avoided if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, on certain antibiotics (eg:-erythromycin), have a known hypersensitivity to any ingredient in the botulinum toxin product or have a muscular disorder such as myasthenia gravis or Eaton Lambert syndrome. Anticoagulation medication and bleeding / bruising disorders.
